Our Mission Statement . . .

Our hope for children is that they will move through life with the grace and dignity that comes from having been cherished.

Our Philosophy . . .

The Hazelwild Farm Educational Foundation is located on an ancestral homestead. Ms. A. Elizabeth Morrison established this non-profit foundation to continue her lifelong career of education and care for young children. The foundation and its board are responsible for the operation of the school and a summer camp program. These programs have been in continous operaton since 1960. Children who attend any of our programs have an opportunity to observe farm life and learn in an operating farm environment.

While the school is licensed by the Social Services Department as a Day Care Center, we like to consider ourselves a little more.  We offer a structured learning program with frequent periods of relaxation and coordinated activities geared to the age and ability of the individual child.

 Our Teaching Staff . . .

Our teaching staff is professionally prepared with experience in both public and private schools.  All of the teachers have extensive training in the field of early childhood education and child development.  Every member of the staff carries on our school philosophy and treats each child with care and respect.We invite you to make an appointment to visit our facilities and meet our staff.We strive for the harmonious development of your child in a stimulating but relaxed atmosphere, with a wholesome outdoor setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet within a few minutes drive from the city.

 Our Curriculum . . .
Our preschool program utilizes a developmental approach, which includes the emotional, social physical and academic well being of each child. Throughout the calendar year both seasonal and traditional school theme units are introduced. Each idea is adapted to be developmentally appropriate for each age group. Learning occurs through socialization with others, songs and finger plays, small and large group experiences, interactive play through classroom centers, and fine and gross motor activities. We provide special classes each week in Spanish,  Music and Physical Education.
 Reading

The reading curriculum that is used at Hazelwild is one of a Phonovisual Method of teaching.  The procedure is taught in three basic steps:

  1. Teach all initial consonant sounds;
  2. Teach all initial and final consonant sounds
  3. Teach vowel sounds.

 Math

We believe that young children learn best by doing, playing, exploring and experimenting with materials that they can see, touch and manipulate.  For this reason the math program we implement uses a "hands-on" approach.  The students use various manipulatives, which include pattern blocks, unifix cubes, geo-boards, counting bears, attitude tiles and links.  As the children interact with these objects they will acquire the skills necessary to lay a successful foundation in mathematics.

 Science & Social Studies

Hazelwild's science curriculum covers topics such as Animal Life, The Five Senses, Prehistoric Life, Transportation, Plant Life, Weather, and Sea Life. Categories included in the Social Studies program are School Life, Holiday, Other Cultures, Family Life, Current Events, and Community Helpers/Service. "Hands-on" projects and activities add to the fun of exploring and experimenting within these two curriculums.
