HAZELWILD FARM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Hazelwild Farm is located on the 600 acre ancestral homestead of Anna Elizabeth Morrison. Miss Morrison was a dairy farmer, public teach & coach. She established the foundation to continue her life-long career of education & care for children. As a non-profit organization, we are dedicated to the academic & physical development of children & adults, in honor of Miss Morrison.
We have proudly provided the Fredericksburg area with various educational program experiences for 45+ years. Children who attend today have grandparents & parents who have also attended our school & camps or have ridden in our equestrian center. On the farm, children have an opportunity to observe farm life & to learn in a unique operating horse farm environment.

Saddle up for a life-changing experience!
Hazelwild Farm's Therapeutic Riding Program offers specialized horseback riding lessons for all ages of riders with a wide range of physical, cognitive & emotional disabilities. The lessons serve therapeutic purposes by increasing stability, flexibility, strength, motor skills, cognitive ability & confidence for the riders, along with providing many other physical & emotional benefits.
We are proud to offer the benefits of Therapeutic Horseback Riding.
At Hazelwild Farm, our riders improve
PHYSICALLY. SENSORIALLY. EMOTIONALLY. COGNITIVELY. SOCIALLY.
Physically
The horse's movement has a dynamic effect on the rider's body. The horse stimulates the rider's pelvis & trunk in a manner that closely resembles a human's normal gait. This movement can be used to produce specific physical changes in the rider, including normalization of tone, improvement in posture & balance & increased strength.

Sensorially
The horse's movement can help with a variety of sensory integration issues. A smooth-gaited, consistently paced horse provides needed input to help a rider establish rhythm. A rough-gaited horse may provide a rider with the stimulation to help organize and integrate sensory input. Movement exploration while on the horse helps improve overall body awareness.

Emotionally
The success of overcoming fear & anxiety helps a rider realize self-worth & increased self-esteem. The ability to achieve a riding skill also has a positive effect on the rider's self-perception. For some of the youths, the farm & barn environment, the companion animal bonding & the development of new skills are all critical components in the success of the experience. The relationships that develop between riders, volunteers, horses & staff are integral to the positive emotional experience that we strive to create within our program.

Cognitively
The horse provides the motivation for our riders to learn many new things. Educational goals such as letter recognition & sequencing can be incorporated into riding activities.

Socially
Therapeutic riding enables individuals to interact with their peers in a group activity. Riding & the related activities are both fun & challenging.
The Hazelwild Heroes Therapeutic Riding Program is for riders of all ages & with various disabilities & challenges, including but not limited to: Autism, Asberger's, Cerebral Palsy, Down's Syndrome, Developmental Delays, Mental Retardation, Fragile X Syndrome & Visual Impairments
